CRY OF THE TIMES

You hear it, ever so often, today
It’s a statement I don’t think much of..
It shows a lack of concern for each other,
In what was known as ‘brotherly love’!

“I’ll live MY life, and you live YOURS”!
That’s the modern cry of the times.
“I can’t be bothered with YOUR problems,
There are other things that are on MY mind!”

We tell ourselves we’re too busy
Handling our own ‘state of affairs’.
“Why should I bother with YOUR problems?
It’s not MY responsibility, it’s THEIRS!

If I know someone who can’t cope as he should.
Well, really now, what’s that to me?
It’s not MY fault that he’s not capable
Of handling his responsibility!

I’ll live MY life, YOU live YOURS!
Then we won’t get in each other’s way.
Why should I bother with YOUR problems?
That won’t bring me extra pay!”

“Dog eat dog”. That’s the way that it is.
“It’s a cruel world, son”, we’re told.
Well, what of the story of the Good Samaritan?
Is it too old fashioned, is it too old?

“Come-on now, let’s be realistic...
That was back in the old ‘bible-days’!
Things are different now, don’t you know that?
Today, we do things in different ways!

We’ve got to look-out for old number one,
We must think of OUR well-being, FIRST.
If we get the jump on some other fool,
What’s it to ME, if he ends-up getting hurt?

I’ll live MY life, you live YOURS!
There’s just not time for another way.
I may end-up living my life, all ALONE,
After all, there’s only the devil to pay!”
