IN THE AUGUST OF LIFE

In the August of Life, a peculiar time,
So hard to comprehend...
I’m not complaining, don’t get me wrong;
We must accept what the Lord will send.

But in our youth, or Spring of life,
We bounce right back, so quick!
Usually healthy and strong in the Spring of life
You hardly know what it’s like to be sick!

Then, next we enter the Summertime,
Our crowning ambitions come forth.
We can handle anything that may come up,
From the South Pole to the North!

Eventually then, we accept the fact
We’ll fall short of some ideals.
We settle-down and become complacent,
Doing fine, just to earn our meals.

Then it happens, ever so gradual,
It creeps in so sneakily slow...
You’re entering the August years of life;
They’re on you, before you know!

You don’t bounce back with such gusto,
Your health isn’t quite what it was;
But you’ve learned about a thing or two..
Vengeance and hate, take a back seat to love.

It’s so much more important to you
To concentrate on things that count;
Even though things have slowed down a bit,
Your desire to do better will mount.

Is it true then, in the August of Life
You try harder to achieve your goals?..
Or, maybe the truth of the matter is
It’s harder to try......Eh, who knows?

What I do feel right at this moment
Is how long does this August last?
Winter.... I know you’re just around the corner,
What will YOU bring?  I don’t think I’ll ask!
