JUST PEPE' and ME

God!  The echoes I hear, are more than I can stand,
In this old house, when I'm alone.
I've no one else to share myself with,
So I thought I would work on this poem.

The kids have drifted.. each their own way.
Where are you, my children.. all three?
It's so lonely here, much too quiet.
I guess it's just Pepe' and me!

Pepe' is our poodle, our faithful friend.
He's been with us for quite a time.
He and I have much in common..
He 'talks'...but not in rhyme.

He's lonesome too, without his mate;
But he's really a comfort to me.
When I come home he's eagerly waiting.
By the door, is where he'll be!

But I'm sure if he had his 'druthers',
It's Fru-Fru he'd rather see.
Fru-Fru's his mate, he lost a while back..
A similar thing happened to me.

So here we are, faithful Pepe',
Sitting around, wondering what to do.
I certainly miss my wife tonight,
And I've no doubt,... so do you!

We can talk of the good times that we've had,
You saw this family grow-up.
In fact, you joined our family
When you were just a tiny pup!

You grew-up along with all three kids,
Through gentle breezes and hard winds that would blow.
I'm wondering tonight, as I sit here and write
Yes, I'm wondering, how much DID they grow?

I used to laugh at what my father said,
But our thoughts then were so far apart.
He said: "LITTLE kids step on your toes...
And when the're BIGGER, they step on your heart!"

Tonight I can tell you my opinion for sure,
What he said, was in no way wrong.
It takes special help from the Lord, raising kids.
By myself,... I'm just not that strong!
