THE LADDER

Is a ladder something you climb, or descend?
There must be a reason for either direction.
The reason? It’s simple: To go up or down,
But the MOTIVE, takes a deeper reflection.

Am I safe in saying we climb a ladder
To reach those difficult heights?
I think so, but the MOTIVE?
Is it practical, or just the ‘bright lights’?

I’ve querried myself on this dilemma,
I’d rather it wasn’t for the lights.
To be totally honest, I’m just not sure;
I must keep the right goal in my sights.

The incentive, yes, that’s what’s important.
It’s the GAS that fuels the motive on.
But when the incentive is no longer,
The Reason? The Motive?  Well, they’re gone!

It’s really not the top rung of the ladder,
That’s just the goal that you finally reach.
But, the INCENTIVE, ...THAT’S most important..
A difficult lesson, to learn, or to teach.

The motive to enter a race is to win,
But that’s not what I’m speaking of..
What I’m trying to describe is incentive..
Which can only be propelled by love.

The reason.. the motive?  They’re secondary.
They’re important, that’s very true.
But what can make you a real ‘winner’?
It’s LOVE and UNDERSTANDING, toward you.

I don’t think it’s the lights, I really don’t.
It’s that satisfied feeling, in your soul;
Because of the love, and belief in you..
That convinces you, you’ve reached your goal.
